Introduced to Montessori and Africa Unit Study

Oh, it has been a while since I’ve posted anything and I am so sorry about that. I have revamped yet again Caleb’s science and history curriculum’s.  We’ve been trying different curriculum’s and are just struggling to find a “good” fit for us. So after A LOT of discussion with the Hubs, I’ve decided to create my own again.

Honestly, the first inspiration came when I went on a college weekend tour with my little sister about a month ago. She is planning on attending Bethany Missionary College in MN starting January and it was wonderful being able to spend a weekend with her there; just feeling things out.  I was fortunate enough to sit in on a class about  Montessori style teaching while there. To say that the teacher had me at hello is a HUGE understatement. I’ve heard of this style before but really did not know much about it. When I got home I dived into my usual research mode. I read everything and anything online, checked out EVERY single book my library had on the subject and talked with a few homeschoolers that use that style in their own homes.  I was HOOKED! I still have ALOT to learn but we decided to start implementing it into our homeschool. I really liked the scope and sequence that it offers for a child age ranges verses a grade level. I figured out what Caleb should be learning for his age and we decided to just break it down.

I asked him what he wanted to start with and he said continents. Then, I ran with it. We are going to learn about the continent itself, major landmarks, biomes, animals, plants, and of course culture. I have a rough outline already done for Africa, which I will post on here. I plan on adding more details to it as we progress through.

It is a HUGE list and I hope that it can spark some ideas for you. I would also LOVE to hear projects or things that you may have done in your home for any of these topics.

To help you understand my “madness” here’s a little key: check out my pinterest page under DanaHodach, there I have a board entitled Africa. In the list if it says PIN that is where you can find the activity or project. You-tube means we are just finding a short video (no more than 10 minutes) to give a general overview of the topic. I also expect him to write a paragraph after each topic to show what he has learned and I will be providing tests periodically as well.

Like I said before, I know this is a huge list and I’m not sure how long it will take for us to get through it all. I promise to update links and comments as we go through it.
